I’m off on my travels to do some wedding photography in Cyprus. It’s not my usual thing but will give it a go! Once again the complexities of travelling with camera equipment rear, but hopefully with a few tricks, I will be able to get all the gear on board. Luckily this time some of my travelling companions can cope with any equipment overflow!

A few useful techniques that I have found to work are making sure your carry on bag weighs the correct weight, but keep any additional gear in plastic bags on your luggage trolley or alternatively make sure that you have a coat or waistcoat with a large pocket to place items in. Once checked in and any bags that are checked will be to airline requirements, you can then place the additional gear into the bag for the rest of the trip. This way the gear is on the plane with you, but check-in is made easier. It would be nice if airlines made an allowance for photographic equipment up to a sensible limit, and I personally would be willing to pay a reasonable additional fee for this service.

At least now travelling without film makes life easier. I will be taking both colour and black and white images, and even though I still love film, I tend to travel less with it these days. Occasionally I take my Holga cameras away as well, so I will take only a few 120 rolls with me in the hand luggage. The days of taking over 200 rolls of 35mm and 120 films are over.
